Conditioning yogurt hair masque for dry damaged hair

Yesterday was National Unplugging Day so we all took the day off, which is why you’re getting your weekly beauty fix today instead… a lovely conditioning yogurt hair masque for dry, damaged hair… devised by Pawan Ahsan.

Summer is upon us and, for me, having naturally curly hair (which I stubbornly subject to persistent straightening, colouring and blow drying) usually means my summer months are spent fighting with hair that’s prone to frizz and weeping at the resulting dryness from heat styling, numerous chemicals, along with the effects of those glorious days spent out in the sun. The humidity turns all my efforts of perfected sleek smoothness before leaving the house, to what can only be described as a worn out string mop head towards midday! So, in my search for natural solutions to treating my damaged and dry hair with some much-needed love, this conditioning yogurt hair mask works wonders and it’s certainly a more budget friendly and chemical-free alternative to the more pricey hair treatments on the market.

The natural yogurt and egg in this masque provide lots of protein which our hair is primarily made up of, i.e. keratin, and also contain vitamins A, D and B12, which help prevent hair breakage, hair loss and stimulate hair growth. The protein strengthens and nourishes hair, preventing split ends and hair damage while the lactic acids in yogurt also cleanses the scalp of dead skin cells that in turn help hair follicles to grow.

The addition of extra virgin olive oil provides essential nutrients and monounsaturated fatty acids, which hydrate and strengthen hair from root to tip. Olive oil coats the hair strand, protecting the outer layer from heat styling and antioxidants that fight free radicals that contribute to premature aging. I’ve also included a small amount of lemon juice, which is rich in vitamin C that boosts the production of collagen, improving hair growth and its anti-fungal properties help maintain a healthy scalp and regulate oil production at the roots.

Used once a week, you’re sure to see and feel the difference for yourself. Hair feels more manageable, stronger and naturally shinier and best of all – no more frizzy hair days!


4 tbsp natural yogurt

1 large egg, beaten

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 tbsp fresh lemon juice


  1. Mix all the ingredients well in a bowl.
  2. Apply to dry, unwashed hair, from roots to tips and massage thoroughly.
  3. Using a shower cap, leave the hair masque on for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer for extra conditioning.
  4. Wash hair thoroughly with a good shampoo, twice if necessary and condition as normal.
  5. Use once a week for gorgeous, healthy frizz-free hair!
