Natural look for summer

We used the word ‘natural’ when talking about the ‘nude’ look as this isn’t adult content, it’s how to make yourself look fresh in this heatwave. Pawan Ahsan reports.

The season of festivals, barbeques, gorgeous sunny days and long humid nights, brings much-needed relief from the harshness of those winter months. However, being blessed with the heat and sunshine doesn’t do any favours for makeup or the clogged up pores as the layers inevitably begin to melt and you arrive at that barbeque looking like you’ve just gone hardcore at the gym! A natural look is always better suited to such weather and some wonder products even help with the quality of your skin, meaning the less you wear, make-up-wise, the more radiant and flawless your face looks naturally, which then helps to keep it that way all day long. So, thankfully I’ve left my melted-face days behind, all with the help of these fantastic products that actually do what they say on the tin!

Skin – Back to Base-ics
The quality and condition of your skin will always be a determining factor towards how well your make up looks and how compatible the product is with your skin. For example, someone with very dry skin will find that certain foundations highlight the dry areas and the product itself appears cracked and flaky. But all hope is not lost, you can transform the canvas of your face and create a flawless smooth base, enhancing your natural features with little effort.

After a regular skincare routine of deep cleansing, exfoliating a few times a week and using a good quality toner, try using Vit C-30 Ultra Brightening Serum from The Hero Project. It contains 30% ethylated L-Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) which is one of the highest amounts ever included in a product. It provides clarity, evenness and brightness to the skin and helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And if that wasn’t enough, the high antioxidant content also protects the skin from further damage too. I noticed a remarkable difference after just a few days and it really did improve the appearance and texture of my skin. Dark patches became lighter and my skin felt smoother and more radiant. Recommended for 30+ skin and available at  and from RRP £39.00

Another fantastic serum I’ve tried is the Performance Face Serum by Nakin, with Hibiscus, Hyaluronic Acid, antioxidant oils and extracts which all help to improve fine lines and elasticity, rejuvenating the skin. This serum left my skin feeling toned and impressively smooth. I followed up with Nakin’s Revitalising Face Oil, with skin enhancing plant oils, Baobab, Argan, Peach Kernel and Jojoba which replenish and soothe the skin. My skin felt hydrated yet non-greasy and after a few days, having used this morning and night, there was a definite improvement in my complexion. Available at Nakin Performance Face Serum 50ml  RRP £25 and Nakin Revitalising Face Oil 50ml RRP £22.

Face – Less is more!
Once you’ve achieved a great base with your complexion, you may not require as much coverage with a foundation. BB (beauty balm or blemish balm), CC (colour correcting) and DD (dynamic do-all) creams are great alternative to heavy coverage foundations. BB creams are essentially tinted moisturisers that can contain anti-aging benefits while also helping to even out skin tone, moisturise, protect against sun damage and the light-reflecting formulas make the skin appear luminous and dewy- perfect for the summer! While CC creams focus on colour correction, with a lighter consistency and can improve redness, dark spots or dull skin. It’s also great at improving acne-prone skin. DD creams combine both the benefits of BB and CC creams but with the added bonus of anti-aging! With continued use, they are said to improve fine lines and wrinkles and balance skin tones. Although there are many creams to choose from on the market, my personal favourite is Olay Total Effects, 7 in one BB cream with SPF 15 and a touch of foundation, which comes in fair, medium or dark. I’ve been using this for years and it has certainly delivered on its claims to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, minimise the look of pores, smooth skin texture while hydrating and brightening the skin. It’s become my go-to product for that nude/natural look and its lightweight formula looks great on its own or under setting powder. Olay Total Effects 7 in one BB cream 50ml RRP £14.99

If you like a dewy and sculpted look, there are many contouring products available on the market. These are used on the cheekbones, jaw line, sides of the forehead and nose, using gentle strokes to add subtle warmth, highlight and definition to your features. I like Isadora Face Sculptor RRP £23.95 or Nude by Nature Contour Palette RRP £25. I’ve also recently found a lovely little 3D Dewy Look Stick by Essence which adds a natural shine with shea butter to cheekbones, without any shimmer or greasy feel to give the face a fresh summer glow. Available at or Wilko stores nationwide. RRP £3.50

Eyes – No more drama.
If, like me, you spend far too long getting your eyebrows, eyelashes and eyeshadow to look just right for that special occasion, wearing a nude or natural look can be far more easier and less time-consuming with a few tricks up your sleeve.

Colorsport have a 30 day Brow Tint and a 30 day Mascara (eyelash dye kit) which are both easy to apply and I found the results to be subtle but effective. The dyes add colour to eyelashes and define brows for a darker natural look that lasts for up to a month. It’s great for people who want their natural eyelashes or brows darker and they’re both waterproof, which is handy for the beach or pool. Colorsport 30 Day Mascara and  Colorsport 30 Day Brow Tint RRP £8.25, available at Boots. Please be sure to follow the safety instructions and perform a skin sensitivity test 48 hours prior to every application.

I decided to wear mascara on top for this look (I chose Volume Million Lashes So Couture by L’Oreal RRP £10.99) but didn’t require as much so definitely a win-win result.

When it comes to nude shades these days, we’re spoilt for choice, but quality can vary greatly. I used to think that finding an eyeshadow that stays put, doesn’t crease or compromises on colour pigments didn’t exist, that is, until I found Urban Decay. I absolutely adore their Naked Basics Palette and their individual eye shadows. (Tease being a great choice for a nude look as well as many others.) The colours are so versatile and they blend easily and last all day. You can either apply just one shade to eyelids and lower eyelids prior to mascara or use a brown shade such as Faint in the Naked Basics Palette as an eyeliner, using an eyeliner brush and then blending to create subtle definition around the contours. Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette RRP £26 and Urban Decay Eyeshadow RRP £15

Lips – Pucker Up.
To complete your nude/natural look, choose a nude lip liner and lipstick that compliments your natural skin tone. I prefer a matte lipstick that doesn’t dry out or sink into fine lines and looks great for an all-day look. I used Rimmel’s Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Lip Liner in Cappucino which went well with an enticing shade of lipstick named ‘Come into my world’ by Neek. Neek is a cruelty free and vegan brand that uses completely ethical packaging made from bamboo. Not only is it a feel-good brand but a feel good lipstick! This nourishing pink toned matte lipstick is made with jojoba oil and shea butter along with a mix of natural pigments which give this nude shade its gorgeous hues of subtle pink with a smooth matte finish. This particular shade works well on medium to darker skin tones but with all the choice in shades this brand offers, you’re sure to find a perfect match. Neek Lipstick RRP £15.99 available at  Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Lip Liner RRP £2.99.
